Climate and Energy Project Manager (full-time, based in Budapest)

WWF is the world’s largest conservation organization, founded in 1961. We’re active in over 100 countries and have over 7700 employees. WWF Central and Eastern Europe is responsible for leading and to a significant extent implementing WWF’s efforts to preserve, restore, and sustainably manage the natural values of the Danube-Carpathian ecoregion, which we also call the Green Heart of Europe. We are working across political borders through an ecoregional approach based on model projects, influencing policy, networking, capacity building, communication, and crisis response.

 

MISSION

 

The Climate and Energy Project Manager plays a key role in designing, submitting, and implementing EU projects aiming for a nature-friendly renewable energy transition in Hungary promoting good practices and supporting local capacity building for proper use of the Sustainable Energy and Climate Plans and its implementation.

The Climate and Energy Project Manager is a member of the Conservation Team working closely with the communication and the F&A colleagues. Relationship building and management with national stakeholders – especially municipalities – and international collaboration within and beyond the WWF network is an essential part of the work.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

●                Developing and implementing climate mitigation and energy transition projects to various EU funds; with the focus on the municipality sector

●                Coordinating the work of the relevant project implementation teams, ensuring that deadlines and work quality expectations are met;

●                Building and maintaining partnerships with relevant stakeholders and allies

●                Contributing to the development of training materials and other awareness-raising and education materials, especially for municipality and corporate sustainability staff;

●                Participating and representing events, conferences, and workshops related to the field of expertise

●                Actively participating in the people engagement activities of WWF Hungary, especially content development for media and social media, awareness-raising activities, thematic campaigns, and media appearances;

●                Arranging project reporting and ensuring alignment of the project implementation with the relevant administrative rules and regulations with the help of F&A team.

●                Take part in and support relevant national or EU-level policy and advocacy work e.g. Social Climate plan, the review process of Hungarian NECP, Designation of Renewable Acceleration Areas (RAAs), etc.

Project-specific tasks

Consortium-level coordinator of the international EUKI-BioJust project

The BioJust project supports energy-poor municipalities dependent on solid fuels (firewood, coal) in Bulgaria, Hungary, and Romania to switch to more environmentally friendly heating methods and improve the energy efficiency of buildings. Although the project aims to make a difference at the level of the households concerned, as their opportunities depend mainly on national policies, funding opportunities, and local possibilities, project work is also being done at policy and local level. In this way, the project directly supports the introduction of new EU-level climate change instruments such as the Social Climate Action Plan, the municipal heating and cooling plans required by the Energy Efficiency Directive, or the new energy poverty expectations of the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans.

The main responsibilities under this project include:

●                Leading the Project Leadership Team, with the responsibility of project progress, performance, operation, quality control, risk management, contingency planning, and knowledge exchange and communication

●                Steering the project administrative and technical calls

●                Leading the technical and support financial reporting, liaising with the GIZ and the project management meetings

●                Representing the project consortium in international and national conferences, and in different media channels as well.

Furthermore, the candidate may involved in partnering and supporting tasks in the following ongoing energy transition-related projects:

●                LIFE ASAP

●                LIFE CEESEU-DIGIT

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and Education

●                Corresponding university or post-graduate degrees (nature/environmental sciences or related technical/engineering fields).

●                Experience with the implementation of local or regional energy and climate plans is a strong asset

●                Understanding the Hungarian municipality/authority system and previous experiences with related processes is an asset

●                Expertise in the field of climate change impacts and mitigation, adaptation, or energy poverty especially at the municipality level is a strong asset

●                General knowledge of renewable energy supplies sustainable energy transition and spatial planning is an asset

●                User-level management of GIS software is an asset

●                Background knowledge and experience about the Hungarian and EU-level energy and climate-related policies is an asset

●                General understanding of environmental challenges and the social, economic, and political processes interlinked with them.

●                Project management skills: timely implementation, ability to plan and coordinate diverse parallel activities with several participants, accurate in administration
